MIUI FTP Service, iTunes Wi-Fi Sync, Shared Library is not working? Probably you have a hidden SSID.

MIUI_FTPI love the custom Android MIUI ROM. It packed with tons of features that are not available in the stock Android ROM and it is an almost-complete solution for Android devices. One of the thing I love the most is the Wi-Fi FTP Service in it’s File Explorer, which allows the computer in the same network accessing the files in the Android device – No more cable for file transfer.

However, it surprised me when I decided to try this feature out – it fails to work. The device and the computer are in the same network, and there is definitely nothing wrong with my router. I have been looking for solution online and I don’t seems to be able to find any – it is definitely not rocket science to use this feature.

How to make it work?

After some trial and error, I finally figure out the issue. The Hidden SSID is the culprit. I configured my home network in such a way that it doesn’t broadcast the SSID (I know it won’t help in preventing hijacking, but yeah), but I never know that it is the problem that causing the FTP service to failed. So making the SSID visible solve the problem instantly. It also solved the problem that puzzled me on my iPad where my iTunes Wi-Fi Sync and Shared Library is not working over the same network.

So if you have a hidden SSID and you have these problems, make it visible – problem solved. A little bit of surprise to know that these features will not work with invisible SSID, but I am glad that I figured it out. Hope this helps.

[How To] Run Windows 8 Developer Preview in VirtualBox with Full Resolution

So now you have the Windows 8 Developer Preview installed as a virtual machine using VirtualBox, but you found out that the guest addition of VirtualBox doesn’t work properly in Windows 8 Developer Preview, which means that it won’t auto-adjust the resolution when you resize the window, and have to stick with the resolution available by default.

No worry. There is an alternative solution to force the desired resolution to be available in the VirtualBox guest OS, so if you have done it correctly, you can now run Windows 8 Developer Preview in VirtualBox with your screen native resolution. Instructions after the jump.

[How To] Install Windows 8 Developer Preview in Virtual Machine

Windows 8 Start Screen
Windows 8 Start Screen

Windows 8, an answer from Microsoft to the rapid-growing Apple Inc. in personal computer (MacBook Air) and tablet market (iPad), finally has it’s Developer Preview released to the public. Since it is not even a beta release, it is definitely not recommended for a normal user to install it over the stable Windows Operating System. However, it is certainly interesting to test run the new Windows 8 Developer Preview, so to do this without causing any damage on your stable system is – Virtual Machine. Currently the Windows 8 Developer Preview can be easily install on Oracle VM VirtualBox only, not on the VMWare Player (do let me know if it is possible). Step-by-step guide to install Windows 8 in VirtualBox after the jump. Continue reading [How To] Install Windows 8 Developer Preview in Virtual Machine

[How To] Play nVidia Tegra Zone games on Nexus S

I love Android. I love the customizability it provides. But I really hates the fragmentation in Android devices. From the availability of the low, mid, and high range of devices, and *exclusive* nVIDIA Tegra Zone games for Tegra-powered devices, I personally don’t see that it is a healthy one, especially for the end user. Most of the so-called nVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset optimized games are purely gimmicks – they actually works very well on non-Tegra powered high end devices, such as Nexus S which is powered by PowerVR GPU. However, some sort of workaround is needed, and unfortunately some of the Tegra High Definition (THD) games doesn’t work properly. I have tested Sprinkle and Riptide GP, both titles that is so-called optimized for Tegra-powered devices, works well on the Nexus S (I believe they will work well on other previous high-end Android devices). To enable your high-end Android devices to play THD games, check the step-by-step guide after the break.

[How To] Properly update MIUI ROM with Language Pack

MI-ONE Render with MIUI ROM
MI-ONE Render with MIUI ROM

Since MIUI is originally released in Chinese language, for those who doesn’t know Chinese language have to rely on the language pack after the flashing of the ROM (one exception that I know is miui.us which has the English language included inside the ROM before releasing to the community), and sometimes it can goes haywire if the flashing method is inappropriate, especially upgrading your current ROM to the next weekly updated one. Most of the time incorrect flashing can cause crashing ROM, multiple FCs etc., thus to avoid it, a proper flashing method should be used.

Here I will show you the method I used to update the weekly-updated MIUI ROM to my Samsung Nexus S (which doesn’t have any issue at all so far, except known bugs in the ROM). I used MIUIAndroid.com English ROM, simply because it works well for me (still hoping for Google Services added automatically though), so the steps below are based on this ROM: Continue reading [How To] Properly update MIUI ROM with Language Pack
