I been using Nero Burning Rom OEM version bundled with the burner for backup purpose for quite a long time. However, if you followed the development of Nero Burning Rom, you will find out that the software is become more bulky and complex, even though the updated nice interface. Plus the software is either bundled with the new purchase burner or a paid version, thus it is totally not cost effective for a normal PC user, since there are a lot of free burning software available out there. One of the program, of course, is what I mentioned, and I recommended as well, Ashampoo Burning Studio. 

I been using the Ashampoo Burning Studio 9 trial version for a few weeks and I find it to be a very nice software, with simple nice interface and full of features that can be done using the rom burner. However, it is a paid version, although doesn’t cost a bomb, but with the wide availability of free program, it is not worthy for the users that require basic backup burning feature.  With the inspiration from mintywhite, I found out that there is a free version for Ashampoo Burning Studio, the version 6, which I have just installed and tried. The interface looks almost the same as the version 9, what’s more it has an advantage of supporting Blu-ray compared to other software, which is really user-friendly for Blu-ray burner owner.

However, Nero version 9 does come out with the free version as well, with the basic data burning and copying capabilities for your CDs and DVDs. (I think there is no Blu-ray support) However, it does install Ask Toolbar by default, which can be easily uninstall through Add/Remove Program in Windows.
